Popular Escudelles sees Andorran parishes cook giant outdoor cauldrons of escudella — the national meat, sausage and vegetable stew — each January around the feast of Sant Antoni, handing out free hot portions to whoever queues. Grown from a 1970s restaurant owner's saint's-day gesture in Andorra la Vella, it is the country's most communal winter food tradition.
