A week-long winter festival in the Andean resort town of Bariloche, mixing competitive mountain sport with older local customs that predate the ski industry itself — an axe-cutting contest, a torchlit night descent down the slopes of Cerro Catedral, a hand-knit sweater competition, a carriage parade, and the election of a National Snow Queen who represents the town for the following year.

Organized skiing in Bariloche predates the festival that now bears its name by decades: the Club Andino Bariloche formed in 1931, the first downhill race ran at Cerro Catedral in 1938, and by 1954 the town was already holding a snow festival attended by international ski champions of the era.
