The story

Aufsteirern Graz in Graz

Aufsteirern is a three-day folk-culture festival held each September in central Graz, dedicated to Styrian traditional costume, folk dance and folk music. Founded through a 2001 initiative by the Styrian regional government and run by an association until 2007, it now draws more than 130,000 visitors, making it Austria's largest folk-culture festival outside the Munich Oktoberfest format.

Aufsteirern grew out of an initiative by Styria's then deputy governor Leopold Schoggl, who wanted a large public platform for the region's folk-culture associations dedicated to traditional costume, folk dance and folk music, which until then mostly performed for small, dedicated audiences.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Aufsteirern was conceived specifically to give Styria's folk-costume and folk-music associations a public platform they had lacked, rather than as a generic beer festival, and Steirische Tracht worn by both performers and visitors is central to its identity

02

The mystery stays covered

Its scale, more than 130,000 visitors over a single weekend, makes it the largest event of its kind in Austria outside the Wiesn-style festivals

03

The city starts moving

Its organizational structure is also distinctive: after a volunteer association ran the first editions, the City of Graz, the State of Styria and the cultural agency Ivents took over joint management in 2007, giving a grassroots costume showcase the backing of both municipal and regional government
