Goygol Wine Festival

Goygol's wine tradition dates to the German colonists of Helenendorf, founded in 1819, whose Concordia cooperative built the Caucasus's largest winery by the early twentieth century. A festival here draws on that two-century heritage and the town's preserved German-colony architecture, though confirmed festival-day programming could not be verified.

Goygol was founded as Helenendorf in 1819 by Swabian German settlers, and within decades the colony had built the beginnings of what became Azerbaijan's modern wine industry; winemaking there is generally dated to 1860, and by the early twentieth century Helenendorf's Hummel and Vohrer families had organized a cooperative called Concordia that grew into the largest wine-producing operation in the Caucasus at the time, making wine, cognac and vodka.
