The story

Nabanna Festival Dhaka in Dhaka

Dhaka's public Nabanna gathering turns a rural rice-harvest custom into an open-air cultural program, organized annually since 1998 on the first day of the Bengali month Agrahayan. Expect folk dance, dhol drumming, and food stalls serving pitha and payesh made from freshly harvested rice, aimed less at spectacle than at keeping a farming tradition visible in an urban capital.

Nabanna takes its name from the Bengali words for new rice, and it marks the day rural households traditionally welcomed the aman harvest into the kitchen before it ever reached a market stall.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets this apart from a generic food festival is the calendar logic: the date is fixed to the first day of Agrahayan on the Bengali lunar-solar calendar, not a marketing-friendly weekend, so the festival moves against the Gregorian calendar year to year

02

The mystery stays covered

The organizing body, the Jatiya Nabanna Utshab Udjapan Parshad, has run the Dhaka edition since 1998 specifically to bring a custom that used to live only in villages into the capital

03

The city starts moving

The dishes on offer are tied to the actual harvest window rather than a generic rice-cake menu, meaning pitha and payesh here are billed as made from grain brought in that same season
