The story

National Pitha Festival in Dhaka

National Pitha Festival is a week-long winter gathering in Dhaka where vendors from dozens of districts sell traditional rice cakes side by side, alongside daily music and dance performances. It is the easiest way to sample a home-kitchen food tradition that rarely appears in restaurants. Expect grazing rather than a sit-down meal, working through dozens of small stalls over a few hours.

More than fifty stalls, each staffed by vendors from a different district, spread across a Dhaka cultural-academy compound each winter to sell rice cakes that most Bangladeshis usually only eat at home.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's core appeal is scale and access: more than fifty stalls representing different districts display upward of 200 pitha varieties, a range no single restaurant or household could match

02

The mystery stays covered

Because pithas are traditionally a home-cooked, seasonal food tied to the cold months when date-palm jaggery is fresh, the festival is one of the only settings where an outsider can sample this range without a personal invitation into someone's kitchen, alongside a daily stage program of regional music and dance
