The story

Brussels Flower Carpet in Brussels

Brussels Flower Carpet is a biennial floral installation that covers the Grand-Place with a pattern of cut begonias for four days every other August, timed to even-numbered years since 1986. The appeal is visual and photographic rather than performative: a single enormous, hand-planted design set against the square's gilded 17th-century guildhalls, best seen both by day and once lit after dark.

Begonias arranged into a tight geometric pattern cover close to 1,800 square metres of the Grand-Place for four days every other summer, a scale that turns Brussels' medieval market square into something closer to an outdoor mosaic.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets this apart from a generic flower show is the scale-in-a-single-square logistics: the entire pattern is planted in one long day by teams working from a pre-drawn design, using cut begonias grown specifically for the event, and by evening it is finished and later paired with a sound-and-light projection across the square's facades

02

The mystery stays covered

Balcony access inside the Grand-Place's historic guildhalls and the Town Hall is sold separately and gives an aerial view that street level cannot match, since the carpet is designed to be read from above as a single image rather than examined petal by petal

03

The city starts moving

Each edition also carries a different theme woven into the pattern's design, giving repeat visitors an actual reason to return in a later even year
