Battle of the Drums and Food Fete in Punta Gorda

Toledo District's biggest annual drumming showcase happens the Saturday before Garifuna Settlement Day, when teams from Belize, Guatemala and Honduras converge on Punta Gorda to compete in five traditional Garifuna genres. The competition began in 2006 and became a formal nonprofit in 2012, with proceeds now funding Garifuna language, drumming and youth programs. A food fete runs alongside, serving hudut and cassava-based dishes to visitors between competition rounds.

A cultural-preservation initiative that began in Punta Gorda in 2006 and was formalized as a nonprofit in 2012 built this drumming competition into one of Toledo District's biggest annual draws, timed each year for the Saturday immediately before November 19, Garifuna Settlement Day.
