The story

Round the Sound in Harrington Sound

Round the Sound is an open-water swim race held entirely inside Harrington Sound, Bermuda's sheltered tidal lagoon, since 1991. Five distances from 0.8 to 10 kilometers start in stages from Villa Monticello Dock on a Sunday each October, drawing club swimmers and recreational entrants alike. The event, organized by Bermuda Open Water Swimming, has raised over half a million dollars for the Bermuda Zoological Society.

Duncan Newby and Reeve Trott built Round the Sound in 1991 around a simple observation: Bermuda's young age-group swimmers were training in a pool when they lived beside one of the calmest, most sheltered stretches of open water in the North Atlantic.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What makes this swim distinctive is its geography: Harrington Sound is almost entirely enclosed, connected to the open Atlantic only through a narrow tidal channel, which gives swimmers calm, current-moderated water rarely found in ocean racing elsewhere on the island

02

The mystery stays covered

The 10-kilometer distance is a genuine circumnavigation of the Sound rather than an out-and-back, a format few other open-water events attempt at this length in such contained water

03

The city starts moving

Layering five distance options onto one course also makes it one of the more accessible entries on Bermuda's swim calendar, letting first-timers and competitive swimmers share the same morning, same water and same long-running charitable cause
