Peppercorn Ceremony in King's Square

A single peppercorn, handed over on a velvet cushion, still settles the full year's rent on Bermuda's 1620 Old State House, and formalizing that payment each spring is the entire point of St George's Peppercorn Ceremony. Dating to 1816, the ceremony brings a horse-drawn carriage arrival, a 17-gun salute, a military band and Freemasons together in King's Square, followed by a garden party at Somers Garden.

One peppercorn, presented on a velvet cushion, is still the full annual rent for one of the oldest government buildings in the Western Hemisphere, and paying it is the entire premise of St George's Peppercorn Ceremony.
