The story

Newport Bermuda Race in Newport to Bermuda

The Newport Bermuda Race sends sailboats 635 nautical miles across the Gulf Stream from Rhode Island to St. David's Head Light, a biennial contest first sailed in 1906 and now organized jointly by the Cruising Club of America and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. Race week fills Hamilton Harbour and St. George's with visiting yachts and a finish-line watch that can stretch across several nights as boats arrive.

Thomas Fleming Day, editor of the sailing magazine The Rudder, pushed a skeptical yachting establishment into believing that amateur sailors could safely race small boats across open ocean, and in 1906 three boats and fifteen sailors proved him right by finishing the first race to Bermuda.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets this race apart is its combination of age, prestige and genuine navigational difficulty

02

The mystery stays covered

It predates almost every other distance ocean race, and its Gulf Stream crossing remains a serious tactical puzzle: crews must read a shifting, fast-moving current that can add or subtract hours depending on where they cross it, long before satellite routing made the choice easier

03

The city starts moving

The race also carries real institutional weight, run jointly by two of yachting's oldest clubs, and it draws everything from grand-prix raceboats to family cruisers sailed by amateurs, keeping alive the corinthian, sailor-versus-ocean spirit that Thomas Fleming Day set out to prove was possible in 1906
