Ura Matsutake Mushroom Festival

Ura valley in Bumthang hosts its own three-day matsutake festival each August, built around the same prized wild mushroom celebrated at Genekha but in a different community and a higher, more alpine setting known for its own cluster of traditional Ura-style stone-roofed homes. Alongside mushroom picking excursions and tastings, the festival features cham dances performed by monks, giving it a more overtly religious flavor than Genekha's agriculture-focused event.

Ura sits in Bumthang's highest and most distinctively arranged valley, a cluster of closely packed stone-roofed houses that looks different from any other village grouping in Bhutan, surrounded by alpine forest where matsutake, known locally as Sangay Shamu, fruits abundantly during the summer monsoon.
