San Juan, once Bolivia's biggest bonfire night, falls on 23 June near the winter solstice, combining Catholic feast-day tradition with Andean cold-season custom. Bolivian and departmental authorities now issue annual bans on bonfires and pyrotechnics around the date over air pollution and wildfire concerns, with fines for violators, so the night has shifted toward indoor gatherings, parties, and api and pastel rather than the open fires that once defined it citywide.

San Juan in Bolivia once meant one thing above nearly everything else: bonfires lit on the night of 23 June, close enough to the June solstice that lighting a fire against the coldest night of the Andean year carried practical as well as religious logic, a Catholic feast-day custom for Saint John the Baptist grafted onto an Andean calendar that already marked the winter solstice as significant.
