Atibaia Strawberry and Flower Festival in Atibaia
Atibaia's Festa de Flores e Morangos traces back to a 1968 agricultural fair started by Japanese-Brazilian grower Toraki Yano and became an annual event in 1985, taking its current strawberry-and-flower name and September date. Now in its fifth decade, it pairs strawberry food stalls and desserts with a horticultural exhibition of roses and ornamental plants in the cooler hills north of São Paulo city.
Atibaia's biggest annual festival grew out of a 1968 agricultural fair organized by Toraki Yano, a leader of the city's Japanese-Brazilian farming community, staged at a highway junction outside town.
