Caruaru Sao Joao in Caruaru
Caruaru turns June into a monthlong tribute to Saint John, built around forro music, quadrilha dance contests and the legacy of Luiz Gonzaga, the genre's most celebrated voice. The city brands itself the biggest Sao Joao in the world, a title it shares in friendly rivalry with Campina Grande. Bonfires, corn dishes and nightly concerts at the Patio de Eventos anchor a season that spills through the whole city.
Caruaru calls itself the biggest Sao Joao on earth, a claim it has defended against neighboring Campina Grande for decades while both cities fill their June calendars with forro, quadrilhas and bonfires.
