The story

Ruse Ice Fest in Ruse

Sculptors from as many as eight countries carve a single meter-square block of specially clarified, fully transparent ice apiece into scaled landmarks, from the Eiffel Tower to the Sphinx, at this outdoor December competition in the Danube city of Ruse. Around the carving area, an ice bar, concerts, ice games and children's activities turn the event into a full evening out. Running since 2014, it pairs an unusual craft spectacle with Ruse's Neo-Baroque streetscape, nicknamed Little Vienna.

Each participating sculptor works a single ice block roughly a meter square and about a meter and a half tall, weighing some 130 kilograms, carving it down over the course of the festival into anything from a scale Eiffel Tower to a Sphinx or a stretch of an ice bar.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The defining detail is the ice itself: organizers use a clarifying process to produce fully transparent blocks rather than the cloudy ice typical of outdoor freezing, so finished sculptures catch and hold light instead of looking opaque

02

The mystery stays covered

Each sculptor works a single roughly 130-kilogram block into a chosen design, from architectural landmarks to an ice bar counter, with the carving process itself part of the public spectacle rather than hidden preparation

03

The city starts moving

International participation is unusually broad for a mid-sized Bulgarian city, with past editions drawing teams from Belgium, France, Poland, Hungary, Latvia, Russia and Ukraine

04

The water draws everyone in

The backdrop, Ruse's Neo-Baroque and Secession-era streets, adds an atmosphere distinct from the alpine or Nordic settings usually associated with ice sculpture festivals
