Cha das Caldeiras Wine and Volcano Festival in Cha das Caldeiras
Grape harvest season inside the crater of Fogo's active volcano, where the Cha das Caldeiras cooperative produces Protected-Designation wine from vines grown directly in volcanic ash, drawing visitors for harvest gatherings, cooperative winemaking and guided tastings at the settlement's rebuilt winery. No single fixed festival date could be confirmed beyond the harvest period itself.
Wine grown inside an active volcano's crater is the single strangest fact about Cha das Caldeiras, a community of roughly 700 people living at around 1,700 metres inside the caldera of Pico do Fogo, and it is the harvest of that wine, more than any single fixed festival date, that draws visitors to the settlement each year.
