Festival do Fogo in Sao Filipe/Chã das Caldeiras
Fogo island's biggest annual event, Festa de Sao Filipe or Nho Sao Filipe, runs for a week or more from May 1 in the town of Sao Filipe, combining religious procession with live music, dancing, sporting events and a horse race, drawing large crowds from across Cabo Verde and the diaspora. The same island is home to Cha das Caldeiras, a volcanic crater village at sixteen hundred metres that is the country's only wine-growing area, having rebuilt repeatedly after eruptions in 1995 and 2014.
Fogo island's most significant annual celebration is Festa de Sao Filipe, also known locally as Nho Sao Filipe, held each year on May 1 and running for a full week or more, drawing a large public from both across Cabo Verde and the wider diaspora to the town of Sao Filipe, which for that period becomes the centre of national attention.
