The story

Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival in Gatineau

The Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival, founded in 1988 by Jean Boileau, draws more than 200,000 visitors to La Baie Park on the Ottawa River each late August into early September, with dawn and dusk balloon launches, roughly 300 stage performances, carnival rides and a campground hosting over a thousand RVs. It is Quebec's other major balloon festival alongside Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, independently organized in the Outaouais region.

The Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival was founded in 1988 by Jean Boileau and has run most years since, growing from an initial gathering of around fifty balloons and 50,000 visitors into one of Quebec's largest outdoor summer festivals, drawing more than 200,000 people to La Baie Park along the Ottawa River in Gatineau over a five-day run spanning late August into early September.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Gatineau's position directly across the river from Ottawa gives this festival a distinctly bilingual, cross-border crowd unlike a purely Quebecois event, drawing heavily from both the National Capital Region's Ontario and Quebec sides

02

The mystery stays covered

Hosting the World Hot Air Airship Championship in 1998 remains a high point in its history and cemented its place as one of Canada's two major balloon festivals

03

The city starts moving

The roughly 300 concerts and stage performances packed into five days give the festival a music-and-fairground identity nearly as strong as its ballooning reputation, and the campground's capacity for over a thousand RVs makes multi-day, on-site stays a defining part of how many visitors experience it
