Winterlude in Ottawa/Gatineau

The Rideau Canal Skateway anchors this NCC-run festival, freezing into one of the world's longest outdoor rinks while Ottawa and Gatineau fill with ice sculptures, snow slides and BeaverTails stands. Held over three weekends in late January and February since 1979, Winterlude spreads across both sides of the Ottawa River, pairing Ottawa's skating and carving displays with Gatineau's Snowflake Kingdom, a snow park built for younger visitors and families.

Ottawa's Rideau Canal turns into the backbone of Winterlude each winter, when the National Capital Commission floods and grooms roughly 7.8 kilometres of ice between Dow's Lake and downtown, creating what is regularly billed as the world's largest naturally frozen skating rink.
