The story

Fing-Zam Festival des Arts et de la Culture Moundang in Lere

Fing-Zam is the common name for the Festival international des Arts et de la Culture Moundang, held in Lere, seat of the Lac Lere department in Chad's Mayo-Kebbi Ouest province. It gathers Moundang communities from Chad, Cameroon, and Nigeria to celebrate and transmit shared heritage, and its third edition, held in May 2025, carried the theme of Moundang unity in the face of development challenges.

The Moundang are a farming people whose homeland straddles the Chad-Cameroon border in the Logone basin, historically ruled from the town of Lere by a kingdom founded in the early eighteenth century by Damba, a junior son of the king of Libe.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Fing-Zam is organized by a dedicated Moundang cultural association, Taiki, registered in Chad in 2004, and it grew out of earlier gatherings held under different names: a 2014 Festival Culturel Moundang in Torrock, Chad, and a 2023 Festival International Moundang in Kaele, Cameroon, before settling into its current name and home base in Lere

02

The mystery stays covered

The event speaks directly to a people split across three modern borders, known as Za ni in Chad and Ka-bi in Cameroon, and it draws on the authority of the Gong de Lere, the traditional Moundang chief whose saying, there are not two Moundang, is repeated as a statement of shared identity
