Datong Ancient Capital Lantern Festival in Datong
A roughly seven-week winter lantern festival staged along the reconstructed southeast section of Datong's ancient city wall and adjoining Huayan Square, running from late January or early February through mid-March. Large themed lantern groups combine traditional paper-mounting techniques with mechanical and interactive elements, including designs referencing instruments carved into the nearby Yungang Grottoes and the city's Northern Wei Dynasty imperial history.
Datong wraps its winter lantern display around the city's reconstructed Ming-dynasty wall, using the southeast section and its internal courtyard space as the main exhibition ground rather than building a separate lantern park from scratch.
