The story

Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival in Harbin

Formed in 2001 when Harbin's original ice lantern show merged with Heilongjiang's International Ski Festival, the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival centres on Ice and Snow World, a Songhua River ice-architecture park covering over 600,000 square metres with more than a hundred full-scale ice landmarks - widely called the largest ice and snow festival in the world.

Harbin's ice culture scaled up dramatically in 2001, when the original Zhaolin Park ice lantern show merged with Heilongjiang's International Ski Festival to form the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival, the umbrella event that now anchors the city's entire winter tourism identity.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Ice and Snow World's scale is what sets this festival apart even within Harbin's own ice-tourism cluster: over a hundred full-scale, walk-through ice landmarks built from roughly 110,000 cubic metres of ice and 120,000 cubic metres of snow, all harvested directly from the frozen Songhua River

02

The mystery stays covered

That is architectural-scale construction rather than the carved lantern pieces found elsewhere in the city, and the festival's 2001 merger with a formal ski festival gives it a broader winter-sports dimension that Harbin's smaller, purely ice-lantern-focused events lack
