Mazu Cultural Tourism Festival in Meizhou Island/Putian
Meizhou Island, birthplace of Mazu worship and home to the Mazu Ancestral Temple, marks the goddess's birthday each spring with a multi-day festival drawing pilgrims from mainland China, Taiwan and the wider diaspora. Rituals at the temple, prayer lantern releases, lit fishing boats and craft markets combine devotion with the UNESCO-recognized Mazu folk-belief tradition.
Meizhou Island, off the coast of Putian in Fujian, is the birthplace of Mazu worship and home to the Mazu Ancestral Temple, the origin point of a maritime faith tradition that UNESCO recognized on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.
