Sisters' Meal Festival in Taijiang
Along the Qingshui River in Taijiang and Jianhe counties, Miao communities mark the Sisters' Meal Festival with dyed glutinous rice in four seasonal colours, antiphonal courtship singing, lusheng and drum dancing, and token exchanges between young men and women, in a three-day event sometimes called Asia's oldest Valentine's Day.
Miao girls in Taijiang and neighbouring Jianhe county spend the days before this festival gathering wild flowers and leaves in the mountains to dye glutinous rice, producing sisters' rice in blue, pink, yellow and white to represent the four seasons before carrying it down to the banks of the Qingshui River.
