Weifang International Kite Festival in Weifang
Founded in 1984 after an American kite association leader identified Weifang's craftsmanship as the best he had encountered, this festival grew into the Guinness World Records-recognised largest kite festival anywhere, run each April by a city later declared the official Kite Capital and now home to the International Kite Federation's headquarters.
Seattle Kite Association chairperson David Checkley visited a Shanghai kite show in 1983, went on to inspect several Weifang kite workshops, and concluded their craftsmanship was the best he had seen anywhere, a judgment that led directly to the first Weifang International Kite Festival on April 1, 1984, when seventeen teams from eleven countries and regions gathered in the city.
