The Xi'an City Wall Lantern Festival lines the full 13.74-kilometre Ming-era rampart with lanterns clustered at gates including Hanguang, Yongning and Wenchang, running from New Year through the mid-March Lantern Festival. Visitors walk or cycle the wall-top promenade after dark, viewing the illuminated circuit alongside the modern city skyline.

Thirteen and a half kilometres of Ming-dynasty rampart become the display case for this festival: the Xi'an City Wall Lantern Festival strings thousands of lanterns along the full circuit, turning the wall itself into what locals call a dragon of light after dark.
