The story

Xi'an City Wall Lantern Festival in Xi'an

The Xi'an City Wall Lantern Festival lines the full 13.74-kilometre Ming-era rampart with lanterns clustered at gates including Hanguang, Yongning and Wenchang, running from New Year through the mid-March Lantern Festival. Visitors walk or cycle the wall-top promenade after dark, viewing the illuminated circuit alongside the modern city skyline.

Thirteen and a half kilometres of Ming-dynasty rampart become the display case for this festival: the Xi'an City Wall Lantern Festival strings thousands of lanterns along the full circuit, turning the wall itself into what locals call a dragon of light after dark.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few cities anywhere retain an intact, walkable ancient city wall long enough to host a lantern display of this scale, and fewer still let visitors experience it from the ramparts rather than the street below

02

The mystery stays covered

The roughly 81-day run, stretching from New Year's Day through the Lantern Festival in mid-March, is unusually long for a lantern show, and the zodiac-themed reworking each edition means the gate displays change subject and design year to year rather than repeating a fixed set piece

03

The city starts moving

Cycling the lit wall-top circuit after dark, something the wall's width and paved surface specifically make possible, is not replicable at most lantern festivals staged in enclosed parks
