The story

Yixian Ancient City Lantern Festival in Yixian/Huangshan

In Yi County's UNESCO-listed villages near Huangshan, Anhui, lantern parades staged for the Lantern Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival carry traditional fish-shaped lanterns, an intangible cultural heritage dance, alongside zodiac and qilin figures through centuries-old stone lanes, most notably in the ancient village of Hongcun itself.

Fish-shaped lanterns swaying through stone lanes on the shoulders of costumed bearers are the signature image of the lantern parades held in Yi County, part of Huangshan city in Anhui province and home to the UNESCO-listed villages of Hongcun and Xidi within the wider Huizhou cultural region.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The fish-lantern dance is formally recognized as intangible cultural heritage and survives in its most concentrated, authentic form specifically around Huangshan city, making Yixian one of the few places to see the custom performed rather than referenced

02

The mystery stays covered

Staging the procession inside Hongcun's genuinely preserved Ming and Qing-era stone lanes, rather than a reconstructed heritage district, gives the parade a physical setting few other lantern festivals in China can match

03

The city starts moving

Recent additions of lantern-making workshops let visitors learn the craft itself rather than only watch the finished procession
