Yuyuan Garden Lantern Festival in Yuyuan Garden/Shanghai
Staged since 1995 around Shanghai's historic Yuyuan Garden and City God Temple district, this Lunar New Year lantern festival was added to China's national intangible cultural heritage list in 2011, its lanterns built using traditional Huizhou-style techniques including frame painting and paper-cutting into zodiac and mythological figures each year.
A five-metre pig lantern in 1995 marked the start of what is now one of Shanghai's most enduring Lunar New Year traditions: the Yuyuan Garden Lantern Festival, staged around the historic Yuyuan Garden and City God Temple district in the city's old town.
