Wind and Kite Festival in Villa de Leyva
Founded on 7 August 1975 by tourism director Pepita Gomez de Camacho to make use of the town's strong August winds, Villa de Leyva's kite festival has grown from a small local competition into an international event featuring delta, acrobatic and geometric kite categories introduced from 1980 onward. It fills the town's vast colonial main plaza with competitive and recreational kite flying each August.
Villa de Leyva's kite festival began on 7 August 1975 as a municipal competition organised by Pepita Gomez de Camacho, then the town's Director of Tourism, who chose August specifically because the month's strong seasonal winds had long encouraged local kite-flying as an informal pastime.
