Comoros Independence Day in Moroni/Multi-island
Comoros Independence Day, held every July 6, commemorates the 1975 declaration of sovereignty from France under first president Ahmed Abdallah. Unlike the country's religious holidays, this one has an actual civic program: a military parade through Moroni, an official ceremony often at Independence Square, Quranic recitations, a history-themed exhibition, and concerts with musicians from across the islands. Regional militaries have joined the parade in past editions. Expect closed offices, crowded capital streets, and a genuinely public occasion rather than a quiet holiday.
Comoros marks its independence from France on July 6, the date in 1975 when the Comorian parliament unilaterally declared sovereignty under Ahmed Abdallah as the country's first president, following a referendum in which three of the four main islands voted to break away while Mayotte chose to remain French.
