The story

Feux de Brazza in Brazzaville

Born in May 2005 and held every two years in alternation with FESPAM, Feux de Brazza is a popular international festival of traditional African music in Brazzaville, not a fireworks or light show despite its name, fires of Brazza, referring instead to a symbolic wood bonfire lit to open the festivities. The seventh edition ran September 7 to 10, 2024, at Mfilou district town hall, under a theme on traditional music and continental integration, drawing musicians, dancers and researchers from across Africa.

Feux de Brazza was born in May 2005 as a popular and international festival dedicated specifically to traditional music, created to give Brazzaville a cultural event focused squarely on heritage rather than contemporary or commercial genres.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The name invites a common misreading worth correcting directly: this is not an illuminated lights festival but a traditional-music gathering built around a symbolic bonfire-lighting ceremony that opens each edition, representing an ancestral tradition organizers explicitly frame as something that must not be lost

02

The mystery stays covered

Alternating biennially with the larger FESPAM gives Brazzaville a genuine music festival almost every year while keeping this edition's focus narrower and more heritage-specific, on traditional rather than contemporary or commercial African music

03

The city starts moving

Recent editions have added serious programming beyond performance, including colloquia and a conference on customary African diplomacy, giving the festival intellectual weight alongside its music and dance
