The story

Festival Viva El Cafe in San José

Organised by Costa Rica's Asociacion de Cafes Finos, the coffee institute ICAFE and the national roasters' chamber, Festival Viva el Cafe frames coffee as central to San Jose's civic and cultural identity rather than purely an agricultural trade fair. Held each July at the Antigua Aduana, San Jose's restored former customs house, recent editions have hosted more than 85 exhibitors spanning producers, roasters, cafes, baristas and cooperatives.

Festival Viva el Cafe emerged from a partnership among Costa Rica's Asociacion de Cafes Finos, the national coffee institute ICAFE, the Camara de Tostadores de Costa Rica and a technology sponsor, aiming to present coffee as more than an agricultural product on sale: as a craft, a point of gathering, and a component of San Jose's own civic identity.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Framing coffee explicitly as a marker of San Jose's own civic and cultural identity, rather than purely an agricultural product for sale, distinguishes this festival from conventional trade-fair coffee events elsewhere in Costa Rica

02

The mystery stays covered

Its venue, the Antigua Aduana, a restored former customs house, gives the festival a heritage-building backdrop distinct from stadium or convention-centre settings used by many comparable events

03

The city starts moving

Timing the festival to July, marking the close of Costa Rica's coffee harvest season, ties the event's calendar placement directly to a real agricultural milestone rather than an arbitrary date
