The story

Vinistra in Porec

Vinistra, founded in Porec in 1994 and organized since 1995 by its own winegrowers' association, is Croatia's largest wine fair and competition, centered on Istrian varieties like Malvazija, Teran and Refosk, held each May in the Zatika sports hall. Entries began at a modest twenty exhibitors before growing substantially.

Vinistra was first held in Porec in 1994, organized by the Istria County administrative department for agriculture and the Institute for Agriculture and Tourism of Porec, at a time when it gathered a modest twenty exhibitors presenting around 124 wine samples for judging.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Wines from outside Istria may enter Vinistra's judging only if made from the same indigenous grape varieties grown locally, such as Malvazija, Teran or Refosk, a rule adopted in 1999 that keeps the competition anchored to specific regional grape identity rather than opening broadly to any wine style

02

The mystery stays covered

That rule has helped position Istrian Malvazija specifically as a variety of national and international standing, using the competition as much as a tool for regional wine identity as a simple judging exhibition
