The story

Festival del Durazno de Gualaceo in Gualaceo

Gualaceo's Festival del Durazno, a peach harvest festival now in its sixth decade, fills the Azuay valley town's central streets each March with tastings, craft stalls, contests and performances built around locally grown peaches and their derived products: juices, jams, wines and prepared dishes. Local families and vendors from across the Azuay valley set up alongside the main stalls, giving the town's central streets a genuinely community-wide market atmosphere for the day.

Gualaceo's Festival del Durazno has now run for six decades, making it one of the longest-running fruit-harvest festivals in Ecuador's southern highlands and a fixture of the canton's identity as a fruit-growing center within Azuay province.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Six consecutive decades of editions make this one of Ecuador's longer-running fruit festivals, organized under the banner Aroma de mi Tierra with the Azuay chapter of the Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana rather than as a recent tourism initiative

02

The mystery stays covered

Gualaceo's temperate valley microclimate, unusual for the surrounding highland terrain, is what makes peach cultivation viable here at a scale most nearby towns cannot match, and six decades of local production have pushed vendors well past fresh fruit sales into a genuine regional cuisine of peach-based juices, jams, wines and prepared dishes sold alongside craft stalls and contests
