Festival Nacional de la Pupusa in El Salvador
El Salvador's National Pupusa Day, declared by legislative decree in 2005, is celebrated every second Sunday of November and honors the pupusa, the stuffed corn masa cake that the country recognizes as its national dish, marked nationwide in homes, markets, and roadside pupuserias rather than at one single central venue.
In 2005, El Salvador took the unusual step of formally declaring a specific dish its national food: the pupusa, a thick griddle-cooked corn or rice masa cake stuffed with fillings such as cheese, refried beans, or chicharron.
