The story

Saaremaa Food Festival in Kuressaare/Saaremaa

Saaremaa Food Festival is a countywide programme spanning roughly ten days each early September across Saaremaa and Muhu islands, combining restaurant weeks, village visits, a central Market Day, an Autumn Fair and home-cafe Apple Cafe Days. Running since 2014 and drawing 18,000 to 22,000 participants, it won Estonia's Regional Apple Award in 2023.

Saaremaa Toidufestival has run since 2014 on Estonia's largest island, growing from a seven-day event in its first five years to an eleven-day programme by the late 2010s before settling into a roughly ten-day format in recent years.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike single-site food festivals, Saaremaa Toidufestival spreads across the whole island over roughly ten days, letting visitors pick from restaurant dinners, rural village visits, a central Market Day and home-cafe Apple Cafe Days rather than one fixed programme

02

The mystery stays covered

The Apple Cafe Days component, opening private home cafes specifically around the island's orchard and apple-baking traditions, has no direct equivalent at Estonia's mainland food festivals

03

The city starts moving

Its 2023 Regional Apple Award recognised the festival's role extending Saaremaa's tourism season into early autumn, beyond the typical summer peak
