The story

Stuttgart Spring Festival in Stuttgart

The Stuttgarter Fruhlingsfest is the spring counterpart to the autumn Cannstatter Volksfest, held on the same Cannstatter Wasen fairground from mid-April into early May. Billed as the largest spring festival in Europe, it hosts around 240 businesses including beer tents, funfair rides and Swabian food stalls, drawing close to a million visitors at a quieter scale than its autumn sibling.

The Cannstatter Wasen fairground beside the Neckar river has hosted large public festivals since the early nineteenth century, when King Wilhelm I of Wurttemberg and Queen Katharina established an agricultural festival there in response to famine conditions following the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora, which had disrupted harvests across Europe.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Its claim to being the largest spring festival in Europe, held on the same historic fairground as the far larger autumn Cannstatter Volksfest, is a specific and unusual pairing: few European cities run both a major spring and a major autumn folk festival on one shared site

02

The mystery stays covered

The Fruchtsaule, a fruit-decorated wooden column shared as a symbol across both the spring and autumn Wasen festivals, is a distinctive, documented visual emblem tied to this specific fairground tradition
