Feria de Jocotenango in Guatemala City
Held each August 13 to 15 in Guatemala City's Zone 2, the Feria de Jocotenango honors the Virgen de la Asuncion with a mix of religious procession and a large fairground of rides, food stalls, and marimba music. Its name preserves the memory of the original town of Jocotenango, whose population relocated to the capital after earthquakes destroyed Antigua Guatemala in the 1770s.
The Feria de Jocotenango traces its roots to 1550, when tribute to the Virgen de la Asuncion began in the town of Jocotenango, then a separate indigenous settlement near Santiago de los Caballeros, the colonial capital now known as Antigua Guatemala.
