Livingston, Guatemala's Garifuna town at the mouth of the Rio Dulce, marks Garifuna Settlement Day each November 26, commemorating the 1802 arrival of Garifuna settlers led by Marcos Sanchez Diaz. Days of parades, reenactments, and punta dance performances accompanied by drums and conch shells surround the date, with tapado, a coconut seafood soup, served throughout town.
