Guyana Independence Day in Georgetown
Guyana's Independence Day commemorates 26 May 1966, when the Union Jack was lowered and the Golden Arrowhead raised at Georgetown's National Park at midnight, ending British colonial rule. The public holiday centres on a flag-raising ceremony, official addresses, and a military and cultural parade in Georgetown, with smaller commemorations in towns across the country and public buildings decorated in the flag's colours in the days around the date.
At midnight on 25 May 1966, the Union Jack that had flown over the colony for more than a century was lowered at the National Park in Georgetown and the Golden Arrowhead, Guyana's new national flag, was raised in its place, ending British colonial rule and marking the start of independence on 26 May.
