The story

Rockstone Fish Festival in Rockstone

A two-day riverside festival on the Essequibo River built around fish rather than the usual fair fare: deboning, scaling, roasting and smoking competitions alongside a Linden-to-Rockstone cycling race, boat trips to Gluck Island, camping and tug-o-war. Running most years since 2006, it exists to bring visitors and trade to a small mining and fishing village.

Rockstone sits on the right bank of the Essequibo River in Region Ten, and since 2006 the village has marked the year with a fish-themed festival built around competitions most outsiders never see at a typical fair: fish deboning, fish scaling, roast-fish and smoke-fish contests, and a full cook-off judged on preparation of the river's catch.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few Guyanese festivals build their competitive program directly around fish-handling trade skills: deboning and scaling contests judge speed and technique rather than showmanship, and roast-fish and smoke-fish categories are judged on preparation methods used daily by riverine households

02

The mystery stays covered

The Linden-to-Rockstone cycling race gives the festival a distinct sporting anchor tied to the only road link into the village, and boat tours to Gluck Island add a river-based excursion not available at land-locked festivals elsewhere in Guyana
