The story

Festival del Cafe Marcala in Marcala

Marcala's Festival Cafécultura, held annually during coffee harvest season since 2006, celebrates Café Marcala, Honduras's first coffee with a formal Denominación de Origen, uniting producers from La Paz, Comayagua and Intibucá with coffee tastings, competitions, Lenca handicrafts, traditional food, music and folk dance performances each year.

Marcala, a highland town in La Paz department in western Honduras, holds the Festival Cafécultura Marcala each year during the height of the coffee harvest season, drawing coffee professionals, producers and visitors to a town whose surrounding hills produce Café Marcala, the first coffee in Honduras and Central America to hold a formal Denominación de Origen designation.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Café Marcala's status as the first Denominación de Origen coffee registered in Honduras and Central America gives this festival a formal, legally recognized regional identity that most Honduran coffee events lack, turning the celebration into a producer showcase for a specific protected growing zone rather than a general coffee-themed street fair open to any regional producer regardless of origin or growing conditions found within that particular geographic area of the western highlands
