Festival Cultural Punta Gorda Roatan in Punta Gorda/Roatan
Punta Gorda, Roatán's first Garifuna settlement, marks April 12 with a reenactment of the 1797 landing of exiled Garifuna settlers, as locals ride traditional cayuco canoes ashore to drumming and music before a community march, punta dancing and traditional food and drink fill the rest of the day's celebration.
Punta Gorda, on the island of Roatán, holds the distinction of being the first Garifuna settlement in Honduras, the point where roughly four thousand Garifuna people came ashore on April 12, 1797, after being forcibly exiled from the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent by the British.
