The story

Csaba Sausage Festival in Bekescsaba

Born from a 1997 planning trip by five local organizers and first held that October, the Csaba Sausage Festival in Bekescsaba celebrates the town's namesake Csabai salami, whose spicy character traces to an 1809 blockade that pushed producers toward local paprika. Now run with the Csabai Kolbaszklub Association, founded in 1998, and paired with a companion wine festival since 2006, it draws well over one hundred thousand visitors annually.

Bekescsaba's Csaba Sausage Festival, or Csabai Kolbaszfesztival, was born from a decision made in April 1997 during a professional coach trip by five local organizers, Zoltan Ambrus and his wife, deputy mayor Laszlo Vegh, Andras Csik of the Bekes County Business Development Foundation, and Miklos Musulin of Aranypetak Kft, who launched the first festival that October 24 to 26 with founding partners including Csabahus Kft, Gyulai Huskombinat and the Bekes County Agricultural, Commercial and Crafts Chambers.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is built around the living folk practice of disznovagas, communal pig slaughter and sausage-making with neighbors' help, historically demonstrated by local butcher Miklos Hano and his team and treated as active culture rather than a staged historical reenactment, and pairs it with a simultaneous wine festival, Borvigadalom, since 2006

02

The mystery stays covered

Csabai sausage's own signature spiciness is tied to a specific historical accident, an 1809 English wartime blockade that cut off pepper imports to Hungary and pushed local producers toward homegrown hot paprika instead, a detail that gives the festival's central product a documented origin story most visitors would not expect from a regional sausage
