The story

Beer Sheva Fringe Festival in Beer Sheva

First held as the single-street Smilansky Street Festival in July 2005, this event grew within five years into the International Fringe Festival, now southern Israel's largest cultural gathering. Each July, Beer Sheva's Old City fills with theatre, dance, music, street art and visual-art installations from Israeli and international performers.

A single-street event called the Smilansky Street Festival, first held in Beer Sheva in July 2005, grew within five years into the International Fringe Festival, now the largest cultural gathering in southern Israel and one of the country's leading multidisciplinary festivals.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

In 2017 the European Festivals Association admitted the event into its EFFE network with an honorable mention, placing a southern Israeli festival alongside better-funded European counterparts

02

The mystery stays covered

Programming is staged specifically for the Old City's restored Ottoman-era streetscape, using courtyard acoustics and narrow sightlines rather than adapting acts from conventional theatres

03

The city starts moving

Much of the programme is free and outdoors, reflecting the festival's growth from one street into a citywide event over roughly a decade
