Nagasaki Lantern Festival in Nagasaki

The Nagasaki Lantern Festival grew from small Lunar New Year celebrations held by the city's Chinese community in Shinchi Chinatown, formally rebranded and expanded by the city government in 1994. Spanning the first fifteen days of the Chinese New Year, it fills central Nagasaki with more than 15,000 lanterns, dragon dances, and Chinese cultural performances.

Nagasaki's role as one of Japan's few historically open ports to foreign trade left the city with a lasting Chinese community centered on its Shinchi Chinatown, and it is from that community's Lunar New Year customs that the modern Nagasaki Lantern Festival descends.
