Sapporo Snow Festival in Sapporo

The Sapporo Snow Festival transforms downtown Hokkaido each February into a corridor of massive snow and ice sculptures, spread across Odori Park, Susukino, and the family-friendly Tsudome site. What started with six statues built by local students in 1950 has grown into a week-long event drawing roughly two million visitors and international sculpture teams.

The Sapporo Snow Festival began almost by accident in February 1950, when a group of local high school students built six snow statues in Odori Park, a stretch of downtown land that had mostly served as a dumping ground for plowed snow through the long Hokkaido winter.
