Yamaga Lantern Festival in Yamaga
The Yamaga Lantern Festival, held every August 15 and 16 in Kumamoto Prefecture, celebrates a six-hundred-year local tradition of paper lantern craftsmanship built without wood or metal. Its highlight, the Sennin Toro Odori, features roughly a thousand women in yukata balancing lit gold-and-white paper lanterns on their heads while dancing in circles around a central tower after dark.
In the hill town of Yamaga, in northern Kumamoto Prefecture, a summer festival built entirely around paper survives from a craft tradition stretching back some six hundred years.
