The story

Macao Light Festival in Historic districts and waterfronts

Macao International Light Festival is an annual illumination event, first held in 2015 and rebranded in 2025, running from December into January across 34 locations in seven districts including the Central District, Nam Van, NAPE, Taipa and Coloane. The 2025-2026 edition, Light Painting - Future, ran December 6 to January 11 with 28 sets of lights and projection mapping created by teams from Macao, mainland China, Portugal, South Korea, Australia and the United States.

When Macao first staged its International Light Festival in 2015, the idea was straightforward: give visitors and residents a reason to walk the city's streets and waterfronts after dark during the quieter winter months, when the summer crowds have thinned but the historic districts still have plenty to offer once the sun goes down.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's scale sets it apart: 34 locations spread across seven districts turn much of Macao, from the historic Central District to the waterfront promenades of Nam Van and NAPE and out to Taipa and Coloane, into an extended outdoor gallery

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than a single fixed display, works range from interactive installations that respond to visitors' movement to large-scale projection mapping cast onto the city's World Heritage facades

03

The city starts moving

The 2025-2026 theme, Light Painting - Future, brought together 28 sets of lights designed by teams from six places, Macao, mainland China, Portugal, South Korea, Australia and the United States, giving the event an international curatorial mix rarely seen at this scale in the region
